Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Is a holistic practice that focuses on the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts. Diagnosis is a process of perceiving signs and symptoms and relating them to one another to reveal how they form patterns of harmony or disharmony in the person. Each symptom or sign has meaning only in relationship to other signs and symptoms, and to the whole—mind body and spirit.
This principle is applied when formulating herbal and/or acupuncture combinations for an individual’s symptoms and illness. Each individual herb or acupuncture (and acupressure) point has its own therapeutic effect, which, when combined with another or several other herbs or acupuncture points, create specific mixtures to develop a medicine that targets specific ailments and illnesses.
TCM, based on experience developed over the course of the last 3 to 4 thousand years, is one of the oldest continuously practiced types of medicine in the world. It is now the second largest medical system in the world, used by one third of its population.
